Vellfire headlights split into three eras: 2011-2014, 2015-2017, and 2018-2023, and each era has a different bulb type, connector layout, and upgrade ceiling.
| Generation | Typical light source | Key features | Best upgrade path |
| 2011-2014 | Halogen or HID projector | Projector lens, optional AFS | Full assembly replacement |
| 2015-2017 | HID plus LED daytime running light | Auto leveling, sharper cutoff | LED conversion or retrofit kit |
| 2018-2023 | Full LED | Adaptive high beam, cornering lights | Factory-style LED assembly swap |
Headlamp assembly means the sealed unit that contains the light source, projector or reflector, lens, leveling motor, and wiring connector. Replacing the full assembly keeps the optical center and moisture seal intact, which is why it beats bulb swaps for older Vellfire headlights.
The factory Vellfire headlight spec depends on trim: base trims use halogen projectors, mid trims use HID, and 2018-2023 Vellfire models run full LED units.
Color temperature also matters: many JDM Vellfire HID units use 4,300 K bulbs, while 6,000 K bulbs look whiter but lose some usable lumens and can increase glare in a projector tuned for 4,300 K.
Vellfire headlights fail in five predictable ways: lens clouding, moisture ingress, reflector burn, connector oxidation, and leveling motor failure.
A 2015 Vellfire in a Guangzhou workshop had a flickering high beam on one side. The bulb tested fine, but the connector terminals showed green oxidation. Cleaning the terminals and fitting a new connector restored full voltage and stopped the flicker for less than the cost of a new ballast. This is not an isolated case; connector resistance is one of the top causes of intermittent Vellfire headlight failures.
For older Vellfire models, the three realistic headlight upgrades are complete assembly replacement, retrofit projector lenses, and direct LED bulbs; only the first two solve the optical and sealing problems together.
Keeps the factory beam pattern, seals the housing, and is plug-and-play when the connector matches. This is the route to choose when your lens is clouded or the reflector is burned.
Gives the best peak beam performance and keeps the original exterior shell. It requires opening the housing, precise mounting, and careful resealing, so labor time is 4-6 hours per side.
| Upgrade path | Light gain | Install effort | Legal risk | Cost range |
| Full assembly replacement | High | Medium | Low with E-marked unit | Higher |
| Retrofit lenses | Very high | High | Medium | Medium-high |
| Direct LED bulbs | Medium | Low | High | Low |
Budget is a real constraint. A full LED headlamp assembly costs several times a pair of LED bulbs, but it restores sealing, aim, and connector reliability in one step. Over five years, the assembly route often ends up cheaper because the housing does not need to be reopened and resealed. For 2018-2023 Vellfire owners whose factory LED unit has taken a stone hit or lost its seal, replacing the entire headlight assembly with a matched LED unit is still the cleanest fix; retrofitting a sealed LED housing is rarely practical.
Replacement LED Headlight Assembly for 2018-2023 VellfireThis complete headlamp unit suits Vellfire owners needing a sealed, plug-and-play fix after damage or seal failure. It includes LED projectors, DRLs, and adapters, offering a durable alternative to repeated bulb swaps or resealing.View Product →Installing a Vellfire headlight assembly requires checking the connector pinout, the leveling system, and the bumper gap before you tighten a single bolt.
Use a fused 12 V power supply to bench-test the headlight before installation; this catches wiring faults and saves a second bumper removal.
At Changzhou XinKai Auto Parts Co., Ltd., our production base in Jiangsu handles headlamp development, injection molding, and final assembly testing; we have supplied replacement Vellfire and Alphard headlights since 2012.

All 2018-2023 Vellfire headlights use full LED units in factory form. Japanese domestic trims add adaptive high beam and cornering lights. The 2015-2017 models are usually HID projectors with LED daytime running lights.
You can, but the beam pattern is usually worse than HID because halogen projector optics are not matched to LED emitter positions. A plug-and-play LED bulb can throw stray light into oncoming lanes and fail inspection. Use a full assembly or a retrofit projector kit instead.
Factory LED Vellfire headlights are rated for roughly 30,000-50,000 hours. Halogen and HID bulbs are service items at 500-1,000 and 2,000-3,000 hours respectively. Lens clouding and connector corrosion, not the LEDs themselves, usually end service life first.
Condensation means the housing seal or the vent membrane has failed. Small droplets usually appear after rain or a car wash. If the moisture lasts for days, the reflector and connector are at risk; replace the assembly or reseal the housing professionally.
