Your 2012 Corolla's headlights have probably done more miles than the engine. The lenses have gone a dull yellow, the low beam barely reaches the edge of the road, and you are already planning to buy something brighter from an online marketplace. Stop there for a moment. The short answer is that the 2012 Corolla uses halogen reflector headlights with separate low and high beam bulbs, usually an H11 low beam and a 9005 high beam, and the right fix depends on the condition of the lens, the reflector, and the housing, not just the bulb.
Decide in this order. If the lens is clear or can be restored, upgrade the bulbs. If the lens is hazed beyond repair, cracked, or full of moisture, replace the whole housing. If the housing is fine and the car simply keeps losing light output, check the bulb and the beam aim before spending anything else. That order will save you most of the money people waste on headlights.
The 2012 Corolla is the late version of the 10th-generation model sold from 2009 through 2013, and every US-market trim, the L, LE, and S, came with halogen headlights. There was no factory HID or LED option in 2012, so the assembly is a multi-reflector halogen housing with one low beam and one high beam. Most North American 2012 Corollas take an H11 low beam and a 9005 high beam. Before you order anything, look at the base of the bulb you are removing; the lamp type is stamped there, and Canadian, Japanese, and some other regional versions can differ.
There is also a fitment detail that catches many buyers. The 2012 car uses the facelifted headlight shape introduced for the 2011 model year and carried through 2013. It is not the same as the 2009-2010 unit. Buy a housing listed for 2011-2013, or the gaps between the headlight, bumper, and grille will tell you immediately that it is wrong.
Because the housing is a free-form reflector tuned for a halogen filament, the factory beam pattern is a compromise between spread, cutoff, and glare. That tuning becomes the whole problem when you start changing bulb types.
An LED bulb gives the 2012 Corolla a whiter, more modern light, and a good kit can genuinely improve visibility. The catch is geometry. A halogen filament radiates in all directions, while LED chips sit on two flat sides of a narrow board. If the chips are not at the same height and position as the filament, the reflector produces hot spots, dark bands, and a cutoff that wanders. Buy a kit that states the chip position, and check the back of the housing for clearance, because a fan-cooled LED needs room behind an H11 socket and the dust cap has to close again. If the cap does not fit, moisture will get in and undo the upgrade in a season.
HID kits produce far more light per watt than halogen, which keeps them popular with Corolla owners. But an HID arc has a different shape and sits in a different position than a filament, and the 2012 Corolla's reflector cannot control it cleanly. The result is a beam that scatters into oncoming traffic, fails the kind of cutoff an inspector looks for, and lights up fog even when there is no fog. Many jurisdictions require projector lenses for HID. If you want HID output, plan for a projector retrofit and treat the simple plug-in kit as a shortcut that causes glare.
If the car just has to work, a quality halogen of the same type and wattage is the safest ten-minute repair. Keep your fingers off the glass, because skin oil creates hot spots that shorten bulb life, and make sure the dust cap seals completely. A housing that takes in moisture because a cap was left loose will fog faster than one with a cracked lens.
Bulb upgrades and lens polishing only make sense if the housing itself is sound. Replace the complete unit when:
Replacement housings for the 2011-2013 Corolla come in two broad styles. An OEM-style halogen unit restores the factory beam pattern and uses the original connectors, which makes it the easiest and most predictable choice. A projector-style aftermarket assembly changes the look and often adds an LED daytime running light, but it needs extra wiring, and the quality of the cutoff depends heavily on the projector. A cheap projector produces a fuzzy edge that looks bad and performs worse. If you only want to get the car back on the road safely, an OEM-style reflector is the lower-risk purchase.
After a housing replacement, spend five minutes checking the beam height against a level wall or a garage door. The 2012 Corolla has adjustment screws on the top of the housing; for a left-hand-drive US car, the low-beam cutoff should step down slightly on the left side. A housing that fits well but points into the bushes is not an upgrade.
Whichever route you choose, these checks will prevent the most common mistakes.

The price gap between two otherwise identical Corolla housings can reach 40 percent or more, and the difference rarely shows in product photos. From a manufacturer's point of view, three parts determine the service life: the UV coating on the polycarbonate lens, the rubber seal around the bulb access, and the quality of the reflective surface inside. A weak UV coating starts to peel within a couple of years. A soft seal lets vapor in, and the lens fogs from the inside. A thin reflective layer dims the beam evenly while the bulb itself is still fine.
